How do I get started with my non-medical home care business?

A non-medical home care business helps the elderly or disabled people who need assistance doing various things.

Unlike a homecare nurse, for example, a non-medical business isn’t responsible for providing medical services, such as administering medication.

If you are a caring person who likes to help people, this may be a great business idea for you! Best of all, specialized training isn’t necessary and it’s not expensive to start this type of business. The only two “must-haves” are transportation and a cell phone, which most people already have. If you provide home care in a city with a good public transportation system, you may not even need your own transportation.

Most of the in-home tasks are things you probably already do in your own home, such as preparing a simple meal, but now you get paid to do it for others.

Create a Business Plan

A few of the things you may want to include are:

  • The rate you’ll charge for your services

  • Your target demographic

  • Costs associated with licensing and certification

  • Your monthly budget and break-even rate

  • Your business objectives and goals

Choose the services you will provide

These are just a few of the several different services you may want to offer, or you may want to specialize in only one.

  • General needs assistance: This type of home care primarily involves caring for your client’s day-to-day needs, such as helping them get groceries, driving them to doctor’s appointments, cooking for them and helping them eat, and other such basic tasks involving hygiene.

  • 24-hour home health care: This usually involves two caregivers who work 12-hours shifts and look after all of the basic necessities of an elderly or disabled individual, to ensure that they are safe and have all of their needs met.

  • Transportation services for the elderly and disabled: You could also specialize in providing independent transportation services for elderly and disabled individuals. This may require you to invest in a van or a large vehicle with support for wheelchair lifts and other specialized equipment.

Identify the target audience

  • Seniors

  • Adult children of seniors

  • Community organizations, such as senior centers, that provide services to seniors and disabled individuals.

Promoting your business

  • Website. Having a professional website is necessary to promote your home care business. Make sure to include testimonials from satisfied clients and a list of the services you provide and your pricing.

  • Social media. Advertising on Facebook is very inexpensive and lets you customize the people who will see your ads. It’s also a good idea to have active social media sites for your business and post frequently.

  • Networking. Reach out to friends, business associates, and family and ask them to promote your services to their associates and friends.

  • Referrals. Consider asking doctors, senior centers, and other community groups for referrals or if they will let you place a brochure or flyer about your business in their waiting room, on a notice board, or at the reception desk.

  • Brochures or flyers. Have simple, but professional brochures or flyers made to distribute to potential clients.

Business licenses or special permits

Check local business rules and regulations to see if you need any licensing.
