How do I start a sticker business?

Stickers are used by companies of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, and political candidates to promote their business or cause. Unless you’re going to buy printing equipment, the only start-up costs are a website and general office expenses.

Start with a Business Plan

A few of the things you may want to include are:

  • How you price your products

  • Your target demographic

  • Costs associated with licensing and certification

  • Your monthly budget and break-even rate

  • Your business objectives and goals

Type of Stickers

There are many different kinds of stickers. Do you want to go with the regular ones available in the market? Or do you want to design unique ones? You can also provide your customers with sticker-making software and let them create stickers on their own.

Here are the top 5 kinds of popular stickers:

  • Logo Stickers: These can be given to customers as giveaways or can be stuck on cars, laptops, etc. You can cut even the most intricate patterns and internal cuts on vinyl material in any shape and size.

  • Clear Stickers: Water and oil-resistant stickers are widely used to promote business, window signage or events. Mostly printed on premium weatherproof vinyl, clear stickers can be die-cut in any shape and can be UV coated to give more abrasion resistance.

  • Die-Cut Stickers: This kind of sticker offers endless customization possibilities for business promotions and personal branding. They are precisely cut to the shape of your design and can be adhered to any smooth surface, indoors or outside. They can be made in any size, shape, and quantity. Die-cut stickers are scratch, moisture, and sunlight resistant.

  • Photo Stickers: Most photo stickers are made with vinyl material and can be pasted on mugs, wine bottles, lockers, laptops, the fridge, envelopes for invitations, etc. Additionally, they stick strong but are easy to remove without leaving a mark, which is a good selling point.

  • Bumper Stickers: These are used to convey a message to a large number of people. Made of waterproof vinyl, every bumper sticker can be printed in full.

Buy Equipment or Outsource Printing?

You can buy special papers and print pre-die-cut labels right out of any basic printer, but it won’t produce a high-quality product. Another option is to purchase a used vinyl plotter for a couple of hundred dollars or a new good digital print-and-cut system, which could cost over $10,000. Most individuals who have started successful sticker businesses recommend outsourcing the printing to professional printing companies.

Promoting your business

  • Website. A professional website is a great way to show potential clients your products. You may also want to consider selling your stickers online. Include testimonials from satisfied clients, the types of stickers you sell, and your pricing.

  • Social media. Create social media accounts for your sticker business. Advertising on Facebook is very inexpensive and lets you customize the people who will see your ads.

  • Networking. Reach out to friends, business associates, and family and ask them to promote your services to their associates and friends.

  • Business cards, brochures, and flyers. Have simple, but professional business cards, brochures or flyers made to distribute to potential clients.

  • Free samples. Consider making stickers to demonstrate what you can offer and hand them out to potential customers.
